Natalie Stern '12 Receives Hebert Award

At a school assembly on Thursday, January 19th, Natalie Stern was awarded the 2012 Hector Hebert Award. Bruce Dyer '73 presented the award, symbolized by a lamp, to Natalie. Bruce also presented the first Hebert Award in 1998.

In keeping with Mr. Hebert's love of jazz, music teacher Rick Dustin organized a special jazz combo of eight YHS music students. Noted local jazz pianist Tom Snow '87 rehearsed with the group on several occasions, and conducted the combo in three classic jazz numbers at the assembly.

Hector Hebert would approve of Natalie's record at YHS. Throughout her high school career, she has maintained a High Honors average, has played the clarinet in the band, and played on the girls tennis team. She pursues her interest in music outside of school, playing with both the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and the Portland Youth Symphony. Her interest in French has resulted in her attending a three week French class at Northwestern University in the summer of 2010, and spending three weeks in Laval, France this past summer. Natalie, who has Chicago roots, will attend Northwestern University.
