State Championship for Boys Soccer Caps Fine Fall Sports Season

The 2014 fall sports season ended last Saturday in memorable fashion, as the Boys Soccer team claimed the Class B Championship by defeating Ellsworth High School 1-0 on a goal by Patrick Grant '15. The game was played at Memorial Field at Deering High School on a beautiful day. In a closely contested, often chippy game, the Clippers kept their composure while their opponents lost theirs, and prevailed. All three co-captains of the team are children of alumni: Adam LaBrie '15, son Andrew LaBrie '84; Ben Vigue, son of John Vigue '81, and Conor Lainey, son of Jennifer Woodman Lainey '83. Congratulations to the whole team, Coach Mike Hagerty and his assistants Dale Wing, Eoin Lynch '02, and Matt Morrill '09.

In other play-off games over the week-end, the football team lost to Leavitt, 30-6, in a Western Maine Class B Semi-final, ending their season with a 6-4 record. With only a few seniors on the team, prospects are bright for next season.

The Girls Cross-Country team traveled to Connecticut to compete in the New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships. They finished a respectable 16th, a few places ahead of rival Greely, who had defeated them by five points in the State Championship. With only one senior among the top five runners, the team has a bright future.

Finally, a word about the Sailing Team, a club team with seventeen sailors this year. They practice at the Sail Maine facility near Portland Yacht Services in Portland, where they use Sail Maine's fleet of 420s. The team competed in about a dozen regattas along the coast this fall, finishing with a 6-6 record. They were invited to the Atlantic Coast Championship Regatta at the Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club in Oceansport, NJ on November 8th & 9th where they finished 15th out of eighteen schools. Congratulations to this co-ed team!
