The fall sports season has ended for all of the teams except football and volleyball. The Clippers enjoyed another good fall season, with competitive teams in all the sports, and a couple of exceptional ones. Here is a summary of the results:
Volleyball - The YHS Volleyball team capped off a their fine season by winning the Class B State Championship on Saturday, Oct 29th, defeating Bucksport, 3-0, in a match played in Ellsworth. Until this year, volleyball has been played in just one division, so YHS was competing against much larger schools, for the most part. This year the MSPA created a Class B for the smaller schools. The Clippers continue to play many Class A schools in the regular season, but become the first winners of the Class B trophy.
Coached by Jim Senecal, he team had its best year ever, recording a 10-4 record during the regular season. Leading up to the state championships, the girls defeated Machias 3-0 in the Quarter-Finals, and Calais 3-0 in the Semi-Finals. The championship is a fitting end to the careers of seniors Morgan Cahill, Sarah Crommett, Suzanne Driscoll, Amelia Gallay, Meagan Haley, Lydia Ruetty, and Bailey Sheehan.
Football. The Clippers enjoyed another undefeated season, outscoring their opponents 329-46 in compiling a 8-0 record in the regular season before beginning their march to the State Class C Championship. The team defeated Oak Hill, 45-6, in the Western Class C quarterfinals on Friday, Oct 28th, followed by a 38-0 romp over Lisbon in the Semi-Finals. Traip Academy gave the Clippers a tough test in the regional Final, but the team prevailed, 14-0.
Everyone expected a tough battle in the State Championship game against Bucksport, played at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland on Saturday, November 19th. However, the team scored two touchdowns on its first three plays from scrimmage, and cruised to a 41-14 victory.
Field Hockey - The girls made huge strides this year, finishing the season with a 6-6-2 record, and qualifying for the play-offs for the state championship. They lost to Lake Region in the preliminary round. Significantly, the team was awarded the Class B Sportsmanship Award. A very rewarding year for coaches Mandy Lewis and Julie Hutchinson, and the five seniors on the team: Susannah Daggett, Jocelyn Davies, Sarah Gorman, Rachel Nixon, and Katie O'Toole.
Boy"s Cross Country - In regular season meets, the team scored two thirds, a fourth, and a fifth. They placed 13th in a field of 16 at the Western Maine Conference meet, and 10th of 16 in the Class B Western Regional meet. Braden Becker and Thomas Robichaud qualified for the State meet.
Girl"s Cross Country - In regular season meets, the team scored a first, two seconds, and a fifth. In both the WMC meet and the Class B Western Regional, the girls placed 5th of 13 schools, and qualified for the State Championship, where they placed 10th in the field of 13.
Boy's Soccer - The boys recorded a regular season record of 9-4-1, and were seeded third in Heal Points for the tournament. Unfortunately, they lost to Fryeburg Academy, 1-0, in the Quarter-Finals. Coming off last year's Class B State Championship, the relatively young team lost only to Cape, Falmouth, and York (twice), each game by one goal.
Girl"s Soccer - The girls squeaked into the play-offs thanks to a late season victory over Falmouth, and finished the regular season with a 6-8 record. They defeated Fryeburg Academy in the prelims, but fell to Falmouth, 4-0, in the Western Class B Quarter-Finals.
