November 5th Equals State Championships

November 18, 2016

Yarmouth ClippersSaturday, November 5th saw the Yarmouth Clippers bring home two soccer championships and two individual championships in cross country in Class B competition.

Let’s start with soccer. Both the Girls and the Boys played at Hampden Academy, the Girls against Waterville, the Boys against Winslow. Perhaps due to the 9:30 am start time, the Girls got off to a slow start, and trailed 1-0 at the half despite outshooting the Panthers. But the Clippers completely dominated the second half, scoring three goals in the space of ten minutes, two by Katie Clemmer ’17 and one by Sara D’Appolonia ’18, to seal a 3-1 victory. This is the first state championship for the Girls since 2003, a real thrill for senior starters Ella Antolini, Gretchen Barbara, Katie Clemmer, Abby Condon, and Corey Langenbach, as well as first year coach Josh Thornton.

The Boys game followed at 12:30 pm. Unlike the Girls, the Boys scored two goals halfway through the first half, and added a third after a Winslow goal to lead 3-1 at the half. The Clippers kept up the pressure in the second half, tallying two more goals to complete a 5-2 victory, the third consecutive Class B championship for the Clippers. YHS has won eleven State Championships, ten in Class B and one in Class C. Seniors Henry Coolidge, Matt Dostie, Gibson Hartnett, Chris Romano, and Tucker Whitney anchored the team for Coach Mike Hagerty, but a strong group of underclassmen puts the Boys in good shape for next year and beyond.

Both cross country team competed for the Class B championship. The Girls, the defending champions, gave Greely a tough fight, but the Rangers prevailed, beating the Clippers by eleven points. However, Abby Hamilton ’17 won the race with a time of 18:05:31 for the 5K distance, the best time in any class for the day. The Boys placed fifth of seventeen schools. Luke Laverdiere ’18 won the boys race in a time of 15:49: 59.

Hebert Award and Other News

January 27, 2016

Hebert Award At an all-school assembly on January 21st, Nico Whitlock ’16 was awarded the Hector Hebert Award. Long time colleague and fellow history teacher Alan Hall – dubbed the “venerable” by Principal Eric Klein – made the presentation. Before describing Mr. Hebert’s characteristics and teaching style, Mr. Hall gave the students a snapshot of Yarmouth in the early 1970s: no stop lights, school called off by horn blasts from a general store on Main Street, the junior high school housed in the 100 Wing, etc.

Mr. Hebert would be delighted in this year’s recipient. Nico is a top student, a soccer player, President of the Outing Club, a spokesperson for the student club B.O.L.D. (Building Our Lives Drug & Alcohol Free), a bass player in a bluegrass band, and a music teacher at the Boys and Girls Club. Congratulations Nico.

Poetry Outloud

Amanda Dettman ’16 won the 2016 Poetry Outloud competition, held before the student body on January 7th. Each of the eight contestants – two from each class – recited two poems from memory, and were judged by four local poets. Amanda had competed in all four of her years at YHS, and will now advance to the regional competition.

All students in the school are required to memorize and recite a poem in their English class. Other contestants were: Natalie Bourassa ’19, Hannah Grant ’19, Sage Watterson ’18, Nick Prato ’18, Ella Werner ’17, Isabelle Murray ’17, and Lucy Alexander ’16.

Students in the News

Jordan O’Brien ’17 has a passion for race cars. He recently returned from a trip to North Carolina where he competed at several NASCAR tracks, winning one race and placing in another.

Franz-Peter Jerosch ’19 and his partner, Julia Curran of Westbrook, placed second in the juvenile pairs event at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships held in St. Paul, MN on January 16th.

Jack Venden ’16 and Tyler Waaler ’16 have received nominations by the Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, for admission to the United States Naval Academy.
