Girls Nordic Skiers Win States

March 5, 2018

In a fitting climax to Coach Bob Morse’s career, the girls nordic ski team won the Class B State Championships in Fort Kent.  They won Classical event on February 22nd, and followed up the next day with a victory in the Freestyle.  Sophia Laukli ’18 won both of the races decisively, ably supported by  Hannah Corey ’18, Isabel Brennan ’19, and Maddie Marston ’21.

Coach Morse, who has coached YHS ski teams for 37 years, finishes his career with eighteen state championships for girls, and fourteen for boys.  Most of these came under the old scoring system, which combined alpine and nordic results.

In the alpine meet on February 19th, the  girls team beat Fort Kent in the giant slalom, but on the following day Fort Kent rallied in the slalom, edging the Clippers 83-80 to win the championship. Greta Elder ’18 placed second in both events.

The boys nordic team finished sixth.  The alpine team placed second to Cape Elizabeth.

In other play-off action:

The boys basketball team completed their season with a record of 13-7.  They defeated Maranacook in a Quarterfinal game at the Expo, but lost to Cape Elizabeth in the Semifinals.

After defeating Gorham in a Class B South Quarterfinal game, the boys hockey team advanced to the Semifinals, where they lost to Greely, 4-1, ending their season a record of 11-7-2.

Both boys and girls swim teams fielded deeper squads this year, and showed significant improvement throughout the season.  The boys team won the South Southwesterns, and then placed 8th of 18 schools in the Class B State Championships.  The girls team placed 2nd in the South Southwesterns and 6th in a field of 21 schools at the States.

Only a few students qualified for the Class B championships in track.  Luke Laverdiere ’18 continued his dominance in distance events, winning the two mile by almost a minute.

Three State Championships Highlight Fall Sports Season

November 6, 2017

A lot has happened since our last sports report on October 19th.  This past Saturday, November 4th, both the Boys and Girls soccer teams won Class B State Championships in games played at Deering High School in Portland.  On the previous Saturday, the Girls cross country team won the Class B State Championship at Twin Brooks in Cumberland.  The Boys finished third, but Luke Laverdiere ’18 won the race, missing a course record by a fraction of a second.  Here are the details.

Boys Cross Country – In the States, the team finished behind Lincoln Academy and Freeport in a field of fourteen schools.  In addition to Laverdiere, Ben Cox-Faxon ’19, Odeh Rizkalleh ’20, and Sammy Potter ’18 finished in the top twenty-five runners.

Girls Cross Country – The Girls completed their fine season by winning both the Class B Regionals and the States on successive Saturdays.  In the States, they scored 67 points, 18 points ahead of runner-up York in a field of twelve schools.  Five of the seven runners finished in the top 25, with Sophia Laukli ’18 2nd, Anneka Murrin ’18 4th, Sadie Cowles ’20 19th, Greta Elder ’18 20th, and Abi Thornton ’19 25th.

Boys Soccer – After a close 2-1 victory over York in the Regional finals, the Clippers headed to the States. In a hard-fought game, the team defeated Winslow High School by a score of 2-1.  Eric LaBrie ’19 struck first for YHS at the 17:30 mark of the 1st half,  but Winslow tied the score shortly afterwards.  LaBrie set up Jack Jones ’19 for the winning goal with fourteen minutes left in the 2nd half.

The victory completed an undefeated 18-0 season for the Boys, and marked their 4th consecutive State Class B Championship. Coach Mike Hagerty now has notched nine championships in his twenty-one years as coach.  He gets a lot of help from his assistants, former players Eoin Lynch ’02, Justin Morrill ’05, and Matt Morrill ’09.

Girls Soccer – Not to be outdone, the Girls won in easy fashion over Presque Isle to complete an undefeated season and win their second consecutive Class B Championship.  They had a tough road to the title game, defeating Wells 1-0, York 2-0, and Cape 1-0.  But they cruised in the State game, winning 9-0.  Ehryn Groothof ’20 and Hannah Merrill ’18 each scored three goals.

Field Hockey – The Clippers’ season ended in the Class B Western Semi-finals when they lost to Poland High School, 2-1.  The team had split two regular season games with Poland by the same score.  A good season overall, with a 11-4-1 record.

Football – The young team improved as the season progressed, finishing the regular season with a record of 2-6 after beating Gray-New Gloucester and Freeport in the final two games.  They lost to Leavitt in the Class C South Quarter-finals.

Volleyball – After compiling a 13-1 record in the regular season, the Clippers qualified for the Class B Championship.  The defeated Ellsworth in the Quarter-finals, but bowed to Falmouth in the Semis, losing in five sets.

With regular season play in the books except for football, most of the fall sports teams are headed for the play-offs.  Victories have exceeded defeats by a wide margin this fall, and all the teams hope this continues.

Football:  The team won its first game last Friday against Gray-New Gloucester.  The close out the season Friday, October 20th against Freeport in the Battle of the Bay.

Golf:  The team placed 7th out of 10 teams in the Class B State Championship at Natanis on October 7th.  In the  Individual Championships on the following Saturday, Ethan Haag shot a 79 to finish in a tie for 7th, and Mac Leahy’s 81 put him in 16th place.

Cross Country:  Both teams will run the Class B Regionals on Saturday, October 20th, and in the States on the following Saturday.

Volleyball:  Losing only to Cape Elizabeth in a 13-1 season, the team will play a Class B Quarter-final match against #7 Ellsworth on Saturday, October 21st.

Soccer:  Both the Boys and the Girls completed undefeated seasons in Class B South, with matching 14-0 records.  The Girls open their title defense on Tuesday, October 24th against the winner of a preliminary game between Spruce Mountain and Wells.  On Wednesday, October 25th, the boys will play the winner of a preliminary game between Oak Hill and Freeport as they seek their fourth consecutive state championship.
