Fall Sports – Mid-season Report

September 21, 2017

As the mid-point of the 2017 fall sports season approaches, most of the YHS teams are enjoying winning records.  Here is a run-down:

Boys Soccer – The team is off to a great start in quest of its 4th consecutive Class B Championship.   With a record of 6-0, they have outscored their opponents by a 34-5 margin.  Their 7-0 victory over Poland on Tuesday gave Coach Mike Hagerty his 250th victory as YHS coach.

Girls Soccer – The girls are keeping up with the boys as they seek to defend their 2016 State Championship.  They have outscored their opponents 41-2 while compiling a 7-0 record.  Senior captain Sara D’Appolonia scored seven goals in one game, four in another.

Football – The team has lost its first three games.  Already young and small, injuries to several of the older, bigger players have hurt their performance.

Field Hockey – The team sports a 6-1 record, only losing to York, a team which has won over 50 consecutive games.  The girls will face a new challenge, however, as Coach Amy Ashley has just left YHS to become the Athletic Director at Cheverus, where she worked for eight years before coming to Yarmouth.  In addition to field hockey, Amy coached softball, raising both programs to new heights.  She also worked as the administrative assistant to Athletic Director Susan Robbins.  She will be missed, but we all wish her well in her new position at Cheverus.

Volleyball – Despite losing four key players from the 2016 team, the 2017 version is doing very well, with a 5-1 record at this time, only losing to Cape Elizabeth.  Coach Jim Senecal has developed a strong program, this year led by the Bennett sisters,  Skylar ’19 and Kaitlyn ’21,

Golf – Coach Brad Youngs has a relatively young, inexperienced team.  Despite this, they have a record of 5-3 at this point.

Cross Country – Both the boys and the girls are doing well.  Led by Luke Laverdiere ’18, the boys have won two meets, and placed fifth in the Southern Maine XC Classic on September 9, an event in which twenty-two teams participated.  Laverdiere won that race, as well as the two WMC meets.  The girls, led by a trio of seniors, Anneka Murrin, Sophia Laukli, and Greta Elder, placed third in the Southern Maine XC Classic, and have also won their first two WMC meets.  Of course, the biggest news on the cross country front is that Bob Morse has retired after 40+ years as coach of the Clipper teams.  YHS track coach John Rogers has replaced him.

Baseball Wins State Championship

Saturday, June 17th was a busy day for supporters of Yarmouth High sports, as three teams were playing in State Championship games. Some fans took in all three games.   The girls lacrosse played at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland at 10:00 am, followed by the boys lacrosse at 12:30 pm. Unfortunately, both those teams lost.

So the faithful headed to St. Joseph’s College in Windham to watch the baseball team take on Old Town in the Class B final. The team did not disappoint, defeating the defending champions 3-0 behind the pitching of Gibson Harnett, who needed only 75 pitches in the victory.

The team finished the regular season with an 11-5 record, making them the 9th seed in the Class B South tournament. In the preliminary game, they travelled to Leavitt, winning 8-1. Next came a trip to Carrabec/Madison, where they knocked off the #1 seed 5-4. On Saturday , June 10th they had a shorter trip to Cape Elizabeth, where they won 2-0. At last able to play on a neutral field, they won the Class B South regional at St. Joseph’s by beating York 5-3.

Quite a season for Coach Marc Halsted and his team, who play a very aggressive brand of baseball. They had just enough of everything: hitting, fielding, base-running, and pitching. Harnett pitched his best baseball in the play-offs, finishing his career with twenty-one scoreless innings. So the Gold Glove sits on the counter in the Main Office today, the first time for baseball since 1995.

Here at the results of the other teams:

SOFTBALL: 12-4 regular season record. Lost to Wells in the Class B South Semi-finals. Very young team which exceeded Coach Amy Ashley’s expectations.

BOYS LACROSSE: 6-6 regular season record, losing most of those games to the top teams in Class A and Class B South. Cruised through the Class B North play-offs, outscoring opponents 41-5 in three games. Lost to perennial champion Cape Elizabeth 16-7. Coach David Pearl was pleased with team’s improvement over the season.

GIRLS LACROSSE: 12-0 regular season record. Sailed through three rounds in the Class B North tournament, outscoring opponents by a 54-12 margin. But Kennebunk found a way to slow down our offense in the championship game, where YHS lost 5-4. A disappointing conclusion to a great season for Dorothy Holt’s team.

BOYS TENNIS: Coach Mark Marstaller’s team played under the radar all season, compiling a 7-5 regular season record. The team, led by six seniors, came alive to win the Class B South tournament, defeating York, Morse, and Cape Elizabeth to reach the State Championship. On June 10th they travelled to Colby College to face Camden Hills. The dream run came to an end, as Camden Hills prevailed 5-0.

GIRLS TENNIS: 7-5 regular season record. Reached the Class B South semi-finals, where they lost to eventual state champion Greely.   Lana Mavor ’19 won the State Individual Championship.

TRACK: Both teams were competitive in the regular season. In the State Class B Meet, the boys finished 4th, while the girls finished 9th. There were some outstanding performances by individuals at the State Class B Meet.

Luke Laverdiere ’18 won three events: 800m, 1600m, and 3200m

Taj Garvey ’18 won the 400m

Eric Labrie ‘19 placed 5th in the 200m

Michael Hagerty ‘17 placed 3rd in the shot put

Abby Hamilton ’17 placed 2nd in the 3200m

Paige Reinfelder ‘19 placed 4th in the pole vault

November 5th Equals State Championships

November 18, 2016

Yarmouth ClippersSaturday, November 5th saw the Yarmouth Clippers bring home two soccer championships and two individual championships in cross country in Class B competition.

Let’s start with soccer. Both the Girls and the Boys played at Hampden Academy, the Girls against Waterville, the Boys against Winslow. Perhaps due to the 9:30 am start time, the Girls got off to a slow start, and trailed 1-0 at the half despite outshooting the Panthers. But the Clippers completely dominated the second half, scoring three goals in the space of ten minutes, two by Katie Clemmer ’17 and one by Sara D’Appolonia ’18, to seal a 3-1 victory. This is the first state championship for the Girls since 2003, a real thrill for senior starters Ella Antolini, Gretchen Barbara, Katie Clemmer, Abby Condon, and Corey Langenbach, as well as first year coach Josh Thornton.

The Boys game followed at 12:30 pm. Unlike the Girls, the Boys scored two goals halfway through the first half, and added a third after a Winslow goal to lead 3-1 at the half. The Clippers kept up the pressure in the second half, tallying two more goals to complete a 5-2 victory, the third consecutive Class B championship for the Clippers. YHS has won eleven State Championships, ten in Class B and one in Class C. Seniors Henry Coolidge, Matt Dostie, Gibson Hartnett, Chris Romano, and Tucker Whitney anchored the team for Coach Mike Hagerty, but a strong group of underclassmen puts the Boys in good shape for next year and beyond.

Both cross country team competed for the Class B championship. The Girls, the defending champions, gave Greely a tough fight, but the Rangers prevailed, beating the Clippers by eleven points. However, Abby Hamilton ’17 won the race with a time of 18:05:31 for the 5K distance, the best time in any class for the day. The Boys placed fifth of seventeen schools. Luke Laverdiere ’18 won the boys race in a time of 15:49: 59.
