Alumni in the News

February 9, 2018

Jennifer Bailow Hill ’92 graced the cover of the February issue of MWM Maine Woman Magazine.  The issue featured women who have suffered and survived heart attacks.  Despite being “…a fit, busy 43-year-old wife and mother …. who skied, ran, cycled, kayaked, ate a diet rich in vegetables and low in processed foods and sugar…”, Jennifer suffered the tell tale signs in July 2016. Very scaring.  Husband Chris ’92 took her to Maine Medical Center, where tests showed she had had  “a pretty significant heart attack.”  After a week in the hospital, Jennifer commenced a cardiac rehab program and shortly returned to work at her human resources job at L.L. Bean.  Since then she has been an active supporter of the American Heart Association.

In January, Brit Vitalius ’91 received an award for Leadership in the Public Sector from the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce for his work to defeat a rent control referendum in Portland last year.

Hebert Award Goes to Emi Ruth ’18

January 26, 2018

At an all-school assembly on January 12, the 2018 Hector Hebert Award was presented to Emilia “Emi” Ruth.  Phil Harriman ’73 made the presentation.

In the late 1990s a group of former students and long-time history teacher Alan Hall spurred the effort to create a prize in honor of their former teacher and colleague.  They noted that Mr. Hebert, who taught history at YHS from 1961 until his retirement in 1980, was an “…engaging and thoughtful scholar …. who was passionate about history, architecture, jazz, and sports.”  The award goes to a senior who “…typifies personal integrity, intellectual curiosity, and the Renaissance ideal of of excellence in a wide range of activities.”

Emi Ruth personifies the award criteria.  She takes advanced placement and high honors courses, focusing on physics and mathematics, and intends to major in mechanical engineering in college.  Outside of the classroom, she has served a Class Clerk all four years and has captained the sailing and alpine ski teams.  A strong musician, she has been a trombonist in several YHS instrumental groups, and plays the piano and ukelele as well.  She has attended Mandarin Chinese classes at USM, and Bowdoin, and has served as a martial artist at Aikido of Maine for nine years.

Congratulations Emi, a true Renaissance person.

YHS Hosts Naturalization Ceremony

December 22, 2017

For the first time, Yarmouth High School hosted a naturalization ceremony in a public assembly on December 7, 2017.  With the Yarmouth Performing Arts Center full to capacity, the ceremony was live-streamed to viewers in the cafeteria. Thirty-one “candidates” from twenty-two countries took the oath of allegiance to the United States.  Canada, Philippines, Brazil, Russia, Iraq, Rwanda, the Netherlands, and Ireland were among the countries represented.

Paige Reinfelder ’19, a member of the YHS Civil Rights Club, was the driving force behind this event.  Last March Paige did her Career Exploration Program at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office in Portland.  She observed several naturalization ceremonies there, and decided to help bring one to Yarmouth.  The Civil Rights Club, their advisor Deborah Johansen,  school administrators, and Portland Adult Education assisted in organizing the event.  Representatives from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officiated.

Superintendent Andrew Dolloff delivered the keynote speech.  Harrison Middle School teacher Charlotte Agell also spoke.  An immigrant from Sweden, she was naturalized on February 21, 1992 in the first naturalization ceremony held in the State of Maine.

Alumni Hockey Game

December 6, 2017

The annual alumni hockey game will be played on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at the Travis Roy Arena at NYA.  All alumni/ae hockey players, male and female, are welcome to play.

Time:  11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Cost:  $20.00

Colors:  Even years = dark shirt;  Odd years = light-colored shirt

Given that serious injuries sometimes occur in hockey games, and that the YAA assists in publicizing  this game, legal counsel has advised us to have players sign a waiver holding the YAA harmless.  Players can do this as they sign in.
